A view of Hjartdal

Hjartdal is a municipality in Telemark. Hjartdal was established as a municipality in 1838.

Hjartdal consists of three small communities, Hjartdal, Sauland and Tuddal.

Hjartdal had a tremendous number of people emigrating to America. From 1839 between 1500 and 2000 people left for the New World. So there must be several thousands Americans with roots from Hjartdal today. When we know that the population of Hjartdal today is about 1600 people, emigration really made a cut in the number of people in this small community.
