The Hjemkomst Center is near downtown Moorhead and just minutes from downtown Fargo in North Dakota. The building has a strange shape because it contains a viking ship, the Hjemkomst Replica Viking Ship.

In the early 1970s, Robert Asp, a Moorhead school guidance, dreamed about building a replica Viking ship and sailing it to Norway, the land of his ancestors.

Modeled after the Gokstad burial ship build around 800 AD, the Hjemkomst was constructed in a potato warehouse in nearby Hawley, Minnesota.

In the summer of 1982 the ship departed from Duluth, MN, across the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean, landing 72 days later in Bergen, Norway.
